Lebanon Beirut Explosion: The Cause Of The Explosion Has Been Revealed

The cause of the massive explosion which happened just after 6p.m. local time through the city of Beirut, Lebanon on Tuesday has been revealed by the Lebanese authority.

Officials in Lebanon said it appeared the blast in the capital city was caused by the detonation of more than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate explosives, a chemical commonly used in fertilizer and bombs, which was seized from a transporting ship and stored in the Beirut port warehouse since 2014.

According to reports, in September 2013, a ship headed from Georgia to Mozambique faced technical problems and had to dock in the Beirut port.

Upon inspection, it was revealed that the ship was carrying 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate explosives, and the ship was forbidden to sail. After efforts to release the ship had failed, the ship’s owners had to abandon the ship and left.

This burgeoning news platform gathered that the ship was unloaded and the ammonium nitrate was stored in the Beirut port as the Lebanese authorities planned to resell the explosive on auctions. For unknown reasons, they kept it in store for 6 years without any safety measures put in place.

Not lesser than 100 people have been confirmed dead, more than 4,000 injured, while the rescue workers are presently searching for missing bodies.

The blast came at a difficult time for the cash-strapped country, which has been ravaged by economic and political turmoil exacerbated by the fallout from the Covid-19 outbreak.

The 4 million residents in Beirut who woke to the full horror and scale of the damage to their city, lives, and livelihoods, will later ask questions about why such large quantities of the dangerous chemical were allowed to be stored in the middle of the city without adequate safety measures, and who is responsible.

However, the Governor of Beirut had compared Tuesday’s explosion to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs and an official three days period of mourning have been declared by the nation’s authority.
